In this case study we see the ability of video analysis to identify problems, set goals and assess achievement.
The picture below shows the same player taken at different times. In the first analysis (labelled 'before') it was noted that the player's smash has a follow through going to the non racket side of their body. This causes two problems - 1) to enable the follow through the racket must cut across the shuttle at impact, meaning less speed is transferred; 2) the arc of the follow through is rotated and the impact position must be lower and further away from the shoulders. This affects both impact height and body shape.
Our analysis recommended correcting the follow through as one of the priorities. The player and their coach worked on this and we can see in the second analysis taken later (labelled 'after'), that the problem is corrected and the follow through is almost perfect. Although body shape has not improved yet, one reason for it has been removed and the player can now work on the other causes (position with respect to the shuttle, and reaching up higher to hit).
