Acidosis
During intense activity the pH levels of the muscle cells fall (acidifies). The lower pH disrupts the normal biochemical functioning of the cell and performance decreases (the cells fatigue).
The cause of this acidosis is the release of protons from ATP hydrolysis and glycolysis. Protons are consumed by the CK reaction, LDH reaction, AMP Deaminase Reaction, mitochondrial respiration, transport out of cell, and other buffers (Pi, amino acids, proteins, hexose and triose phosphates, bicarbonate). When production of protons is greater than consumption acidosis occurs.
