Forehand Smash

[The following pages are a first draft]

Aim: to move the shuttle to the opponent's floor as quickly as possible
Shuttle trajectory: almost straight from impact point to the opponent's floor.  Speed of shuttle means gravity has little time to significantly bend the trajectory vertically
Power requirements: unlimited
Vertical impact position: above the net.  Must be high enough so a line can be drawn to the target that goes above the net
Forward/back impact position: generally anywhere behind the forecourt.  Within the forecourt the shot is typical replaced by the net kill
Primary variants: Ground smash, jump smash
Secondary variants: Reduced speed smashes (e.g. half smash, 3/4 smash), sliced smashes, out of line shots (e.g. round-the-head)
Related shots: Clear, disguised drop

Introduction: the key feature of the smash is the speed of the shuttle.  It is the most attacking inner ralley shot (the 'net kill' having the only greater attacking potential) with the ability to win out right or to force a weak reply.  This ability comes from the time pressures imposed on the opponents from the speed of the shuttle.  Therefore, the faster the shuttle, the more effective the shot becomes.  The technical prototype for the shot presented here is designed to develop as much impact speed as possible.  As with all other shots in badminton, control/accuracy is still important but this is left almost exclusively to practice instead of compromising the technical prototype.

Several assumptions are made in our presented prototype that have a varying degree of supporting evidence.  As such, the prototype can be regarded as a 'best guess' given the current research available.  Please see our ethics page for a discussion of some of the issues raised by this.
