Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Gavin Dalrymple (Vice Chairman of PDFBL) and I have formulated the options for this year’s AGM regarding how the league will be formed for the forthcoming season 2019/2020. There are 4 options which are:
a) Staying as the league is playing matches home and away twice with 4 divisions of 5 teams.
b) Reverting to playing home and away once with 3 divisions of 6 teams but having promotion as one up and one down.
c) Reverting to playing home and away once with 3 divisions of 6 teams but having promotion as two up and two down.
d) Creating 2 divisions of 9 playing home and away once with promotion being 2 up and 2 down.
We assumed 18 teams for the formulation of these leagues, first we created the new league playing 2 home and away by removing FSRC, Bournemouth Eagles and David Lloyd Ringwood 1. Then we did the promotions and demotions (1 up and 1 down per division) to create the new league for playing home and away twice. To create the other leagues we divided by 6 to create the 6 team league, then 9 to create the new 9 team league for playing home and away once. We had to decide if a third from bottom team was better or worse than a third placed team in the division below and for this we used our judgement.

On the 20th April I sent out the AGM agenda which, as always, asked for clubs to let me know if they were withdrawing from the league or adding a team by the 31st May and it’s this lack of information that has made this process so difficult. Hence why the 2 divisions of 9 have 1 division of 8 and 1 division of 10 because we believe at least one team will drop out of the league from division 2. We have also built the leagues to have more teams in the lower division to give more matches to the teams in these divisions as the top sides have access to more badminton via county matches and tournaments. When you are making your choice bear in mind the future of the league and what is good for competitive badminton.
At the AGM each club will get one vote and the person voting will be voting for the wishes of their club. The way the vote will work is the first vote will be “do you wish the league to remain as it is playing 2 games at home and 2 away?” Yes or No. If No then the next vote will be “do you wish to play 3 divisions of 6 or 2 divisions of 9” if 3 divisions of 6 is voted for then you will be asked “do you wish to have promotion and demotion as 1 up and 1 down or 2 up and 2 down?”.
